Douglas County Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony to take place Saturday

Written by on November 24, 2021

Douglas County, Ore. – The Douglas County Board of Commissioners are excited to officially kick off the Christmas Season with the lighting of the 2021 Douglas County Christmas Tree on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 6:00 pm on the front lawn of the Douglas County Courthouse. That evening we will flip the switch and light up our 2021 Douglas County Christmas Tree for the first time. The family friendly event is free and open to kids of all ages.

2021 Douglas County Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, is a collaborative effort of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, City of Roseburg, Downtown Roseburg Association (DRA) and First Christian Church.  The evening’s festivities include a family-oriented program with music, the annual reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas† and a visit from the Jolly Old Elf himself, Santa Claus.  The First Christian Church will have their traditional nativity scene on display, across the street from the courthouse, and refreshments will be served.  We also encourage the public to take a stroll through Downtown Roseburg to see the festive storefronts and Christmas lights while visiting our local businesses, stores and restaurants.  The lights on the Douglas County Christmas Tree and Courthouse will be on display throughout the holiday season.

Update: The Douglas County Christmas Tree

As many of you have undoubtedly noticed, the beautiful live giant sequoia tree that was planted last year on the front lawn of the Douglas County Courthouse has sadly turned brown on the top and will have to be replaced.  Although our facilities staff and our professional arborist did everything by the book with recommendations and guidelines provided by the tree farm, including the installation of a dedicated metered watering system, the tree suffered irreversible damage from the long run of extremely hot temperatures this last summer, before it had a chance to establish a secure and viable root system. We are fortunate to be able to call in our warranty on the existing tree, and a new live tree is expected to be planted next week.  As we know, it is extremely challenging to transplant a large tree, and we are hopeful that the new live replacement tree will have a better opportunity to establish a root system and grow for many years to come.

Following the installation, our Douglas County Building Facilities staff will work on adding lights to the tree and turning the Douglas County Courthouse, as well as the Justice Center into a festive holiday display. *   We would like to take this time to wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving, a very merry Christmas and a happy NEW Year!
