In custody death investigation underway after inmate found lifeless

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — Another man dies in custody while lodged in the Douglas County Jail; The second within a month.

On Saturday, September 2, 2023, at approximately 3:20 p.m., corrections deputies were alerted of an Adult in Custody (AIC) that was found by other AICs collapsed in the dormitory shower. Deputies entered the dormitory to find 49-year-old Jason Travis Jerscheid of Canyonville unconscious and not breathing. They began lifesaving efforts and called 9-1-1 for emergency services.

When EMS arrived, they continued lifesaving efforts which were ultimately unsuccessful. Jerscheid was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Oregon State Police, an outside agency, and the Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to investigate the death at the request of Sheriff Hanlin. There were no apparent indications of foul play.

“My most sincere condolences go out to those who knew and cared for Mr. Jerscheid,” Sheriff Hanlin said. “I await the final investigation report but am confident that those in our custody remain safe and well cared for.”

An autopsy took place on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at 9:00 am at the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office in Clackamas, Oregon. The results of the autopsy are pending at this time.
