Written by on January 27, 2025

ROSEBURG, Ore., Jan. 27, 2024 — The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community College presents “Common Table,” by Andrew DeCaen. A selection of drawings, lithographs, screenprints, and paper sculptures exploring continuing themes of rituals surrounding mealtime will be on display at the Whipple Fine Arts Center at UCC from Feb. 10 — Mar. 12. An artist talk will take place on Feb. 13 at 10:30 a.m. with a reception to follow. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free.

The work presents us with familiar images of people eating and preparing meals together, yet with subtle tropes on our expectations. There are shifts in scale, perspective, presence, location, point of view, and gravity. The images slow down mundane experiences to linger in the smallest moments.

Andrew DeCaen’s artworks use drawing, printmaking, and sculpture to examine rituals and habits surrounding the space and time in which we experience our meals. DeCaen received a BA from the University of Dallas and an MFA from the University of South Dakota. His artworks have been shown broadly in the US and internationally in Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Columbia, Denmark, England, Finland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Romania, Sweden, and Turkey. DeCaen’s artworks have been featured in publications such as Drawing Magazine, Printmaking Today, and 500 Paper Objects. DeCaen lives and works in Denton, Texas, where he is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of North Texas.

The UCC Art Gallery is located in the Whipple Fine Arts Building at Umpqua Community College, 1140 Umpqua College Road, Roseburg, OR, 97470. The Art Gallery is a 1100 square-foot exhibition space that features six exhibitions per year, showcasing a variety of media from emerging to established artists. The primary focus of the Art Gallery is to exhibit high-quality artwork for the education and cultural benefit of the students of UCC and the residents of Douglas County.
