Douglas County Major Crimes Team investigating officer-involved shooting in Reedsport

REEDSPORT, Ore. – The Douglas County Major Crimes Team is continuing its investigation into the officer involved shooting incident which took place on Tuesday, March 9th, 2021 in Reedsport.

The suspect in the incident has been identified as 30-year-old David Robert Ruozi Jr. Ruozi had been identified by Springfield Police Department as the suspect in the homicide of Richard Marshall.

Over the course of several days leading up to the traffic stop and subsequent officer involved shooting, Springfield Police Detectives had been in several coastal towns searching for Ruozi.

On March 9, 2021, at approximately 5:43 p.m. law enforcement conducted a traffic stop. During the course of the traffic stop, Ruozi became hostile and it became apparent he was armed. Negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation for several hours without success. At 10:44 p.m., shots were fired at the scene.

At this time, the involved law enforcement officers are on paid administrative leave, as routine procedure while the investigation is conducted. The names of the involved officers are not being released at this time as this is an ongoing investigation.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team was activated to investigate the incident; the Roseburg Police Department has been assigned as the lead agency. The Major Crimes Team is a multi-agency team comprised of Investigators from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Roseburg Police Department, Oregon State Police and the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

On March 9, 2021, at approximately 5:43 p.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Oregon State Police, Reedsport Police Department and Springfield Police Department conducted a traffic stop. During the course of the traffic stop, one individual was detained; another individual in the vehicle became hostile.

Negotiators with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiations Team negotiated with the armed suspect in the vehicle attempting to de-escalate the situation for several hours. At 10:44 p.m., shots were fired at the scene. The suspect, whose name is being withheld at this time, was pronounced deceased by EMS personnel.
